Yes, viruses have historically evolved to be less virulent. An airborne virus that rapidly kills its host doesn't have much time to spread, so a selection pressure to kill more slowly — or not to kill at all.

Given that sars-coV-2 can spread for some while before the infected person knows they are getting sick, combined with asymptomatic infection, where is the selection pressure?
