Think back to the Cold War. There was *never* an intent to fight the USSR man-for-man, or for that matter, tank for tank. We have always known the Russian plan to 'drown us in blood' - their blood. This was true when the threat was swarms of T-54/55s over the German plain. It's true now.
The NATO plan was (and still is) to out-technology the Rus, to inflict a minimum of twenty to one casualties, to take complete control of the airspace over whatever battlefield - what's now standard NATO doctrine.
This war game is a dress rehearsal of the beginning of the NATO response, making sure all the pieces mesh properly, trying to surface any potential issues so as to be able to fix them in time to save lives. Hopefully it's also a message the Rus will receive - but personally I think their military has known all along how overmatched they are, the question is whether they have any input.
