A better example might be the terrible consequences for Germany after WWI. Arguably, the pressures from "war guilt" payments, added to the depression the US exported worldwide, plus lost productivity from having lost the Sudetenland made a ripe situation for the rise of those "actual Nazis".

Whatever happens to those peoples in the area that's now the Russian Federation, if life gets impossible for them, we run the risk of setting up a similar situation.
