... speaking as someone who went to that one holing it was at least a riff on history (as Gladiator was on the emperor Commodus) and came away spectacularly disappointed.

It had as much connection to actual history as Captain America did to what actually happened in WWII. (I've no issue with CA; it was making no pretense of presenting actual history - IMO it's one of the better superhero 'origin' tales)
