Arguably, similar has happened in the US. We're multiple 'nations', stemming from original colonization, each with quite different folkways. It seems that when people move to an area of a differing 'nation' than where they grew up, they adopt the culture of their new neighbors. Check 'Albion's Seed' for an exhaustive analysis of those colonies and 'American Nations' for an analysis of how that's carried on into modern times (author is here at Medium BTW).
This also suggests that Ukranians who have voluntarily emigrated to Russia proper (Muscovia) are picking up 'Russian' culture.
