To be fair, the French seem to be able to riot for almost anything. I got caught in the middle of one in Paris in the early 70s because a Who concert got cancelled. Fun times. My first hint that things were going to take a violent turn was the vehicles the police arrived in (basically armored step vans). I had enough time to think "that's an overreaction..." before there were cobblestones in the air.
