That SK air crash could have had fewer (or no) fatalities. The pilot got it down on the runway but not stopped - and there was a concrete barrier at the end. I believe international flight regulations *require* a run-off area at the end of each runway. This is a good illustration as to why that might be important.
As a side note, Boeing planes sit lower on their landing gear than equivalent Airbus models. This seems to have been to make boarding via mobile stairway easier (which doesn't matter anymore as current boarding bridges can accomodate higher entryways. I've wondered why Boeing didn't re-engineer higher gear in order to mount larger diameter turbofans rather than change pylons and flatten the bottom of the engine housing (and so change flight characteristics). That's off topic here, but if anyone knows...?
