That photo's particularly on-point. For those who don't recognize what those squares are, they're tie-bar end points, used to stabilize buildings that almost collapsed in an earthquake and now need some help. (I saw a lot of these in Charleston SC as there'd been an earthquake sometime before the Civil War.)
