That letter was about an ordered advance into Pavlovka. It initially surprised the UAF defenders as it was such a dumb move. The UAF had artillery on the neighboring heights, and full command of that territory. Part of the area had streets aligned in such a way that the artillerists could see right down each street.

One WWI strategy was to charge a machine emplacement hoping enough could survive to overwhelm that target. A very high cost - and it almost never worked. This was worse than that. The artillery was at least a km away.

I've no military background, but just looking at a map, I can't fathom what they were trying to do. Any military folks care to explain it?
