Synology can synchronize encrypted (although that means you'd have issues with rsync / partial sync). If you're not collaborating, look at HyperBackup Vault.

I have pfSense at both ends, and so synchronize over a VPN tunnel.

The bottleneck will be the uplink speed on whichever (or both) side(s) that are backing up.
