Agreed that there aren’t enough gender-balanced studies on, well, anything, but it gets worse with AD. For decades we’ve been studying the *early* onset variety because it was more convenient to study (same reasoning that people with monthly varying hormone levels aren’t studied). That’d be fine, but it’s becoming more and more clear that early AD and late AD are different. Early AD, which is genetic (as in heritable) is associated with polymorphisms that directly affect amyloid. So we’ve been chasing amyloid for the late version. Now there are drugs based on antibodies (the ones ending in 'ab’) that do a decent job of prompting the immune system to remove amyloid from the brain - but it only somewhat slows the progression of the 'late' disease. All we have for late AD are the hints that come from the greater risk to people with APOE4.
