I can't help but wonder if this might be an opportunity for port and warehouse workers to organize. Are the "independent contractor" drivers owner-operators? Or do they have to lease their equipment from the lines they are contracting for? I suspect it's the latter as you mention that they sometimes end up owing the carrier money at the end of the month.
It seems like step one for those of us reading this is to get it in front of as many other people as possible. I've sent links to pretty much everybody in my address book.
I'd also like to copy/paste this into emails I can send to my senators and representative - just to remove one step from getting them to read it. That OK?
