Speaking of taking prisoners, there's a parallel in the American Revolutionary War. Washington was convinced that captured Hessian soldiers weren't here fighting of their own free will (spoiler: they were) so he made an order that Hessian soldiers were to be treated kindly 'as your own sons'. After the war, most of the unmarried men stayed - and many of the married went back to Hesse and returned with their families. I'm aware of this as I'm descended from one of those Hessians-who-stayed (thought I had an unusual story - which turned out to be common). But the mobiki who are about to be thrown into this really are not there of their own free will.
