Speaking of "line of sight", the primary barrier is the curve of the earth. I've dealt with this in maritime comm relays.

Getting either party as high as possible extends the range - and I'm now wondering if it's possible to relay Bayraktar control through, say, a unit on a weather balloon — or a second Bayraktar circling above the control station. Just a thought...
