Speaking as someone whose BMI once classified me as 'obese' (in spite of having a low enough fat composition to be able to sit on the bottom of a swimming pool), I'd suggest waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio as a better rubric.

That said, I would *guess* that the issue is visceral fat, given the statistical connection to insulin resistance, HBP, etc. Bright side: it's the first fat to go if you're losing weight.
