Speaking as a self-taught developer, it's more a matter of wanting - and knowing how - to learn.

I can tell you that pretty much all the best developers, particularly team leads and architects that I worked with did not have academic credentials specific to computer programming. But they all knew how to learn - and teach (which, for me at least, is the secret to really learning something cold).
