Sounds like Colin Woodard's "American Nations" might be useful here. Have a look at the map on his blog: https://colinwoodard.blogspot.com/2012/04/presenting-slighty-revised-american.html

Essentially, America isn't just one nation; it's a number of them, with quite different cultures in each - and each starting centering on a separate colony. If you want more detail on the differences between those colonies back in colonial days, read "Albion's Seed" by David Fisher.

Also, as a fellow New Englander, I am much more "at home" in New Zealand than I am in much of the South or West, (excepting New Mexico). And you'll find Hawai'i a mix of 'ohana' (family) and New England.
