Simple enough. I didn't really think people could visualize things like an apple or a mountain, that they were being metaphorical when they wrote about it. I learned here at Medium from this author that being able to visualize objects was something that almost everyone (excepting us, apparently) can do.
Like anything else involving humans I expect it's a matter of degree. For instance, I recognize places and people's faces by sight, have some visual memory, but have a hard time bringing those visual memories up while just daydreaming. One of the kids in my community has visual (or maybe just face) aphasia. They* cannot recognize people by sight but use voice and other clues. It impresses the hell out of me that they can do that and I had no idea until they told me.
*I'm using non-gendered pronouns as I don't know if this is public info...
