Side note on beta carotene (warning anecdata ahead)
Back in my late 20s, I thought I was starting to get night blindness. Seemed odd as I had a decent diet - but OK, I started taking 2 pills of beta carotene a day. I picked beta carotene as it seemed harder to overdose with it (water based vs fat/oil). Do I remember actual dosage? Nope - this was 40+ years ago.
This had no effect on my vision (turned out I needed new eyeglasses - they looked fine but microscratches were blurring high contrast edges, most noticeable at night) but I went from someone who burned in the sun very easily to someone who didn't. Again, this is just one thing that happened to one person (anecdata) but IMO it was an unexpected (and so interesting) result.
