Before they killed the project, Google Wave worked like this as well. To me, the most interesting part was per-thread controllable inter-server synchronization. Take that away, and it's Slack - which does seem to work with a single server. So single-server doesn't mean it's doomed to fail - but Trump is involved, so it probably is doomed.
