For those who lived through the introduction of music on CD, one reason they didn't sound all that great was that those CDs came from masters already modified to improve the way the record groove and needle interacted. When CDs first came out, I thought they sounded terrible (and my first CD player was high-end 'audiophile' gear). When the next generation of CDs came out they were IMO at least as good as records, minus a lot of the bother - and they didn't wear out. I used to have to re-buy favorite albums in spite of high end deck, arm, and cartridge.
