Re that “racism is dead” meme. It’s definitely not — but many of us white folks in areas where we’re the majority have somehow learned to not see it or just haven’t seen it in action.

I got into an argument about this with a friend (who is black). We made a bet. Went to a local mall, individually browsed three or four stores. Both dressed identically. We’re both about the same age. Not browsding together, but within sight of each other. Shop people were welcoming to me (hey, I might buy something) but hovered behind him watching his every move (OMG he’s going to steal something). Multiple stores. Same behavior. Sigh. I had my eyes opened — and was glad to buy lunch (which was the bet). Totally worth it.

BTW, this was in an affluent mostly-white burb of Boston.
