Possibly related: Union troops during the American Civil War received crackers as part of their meal ration, called 'hard-tack'. When they occasionally got actual bread they called it... wait for it... soft-tack.

Also, we seemed to use barrels for all kinds of foods to be transported. For instance, in my area during that period, the most common apple in orchards was called the fillabarrel (fill-a-barrel).
