Possibly related: astrocytes are also part of neurons' use of glucose; they convert it to lactate and pass it on, then neurons can metabolize lactate more readily than glucose as it saves a couple of steps prior to the electron transport chain.
FWIW, astrocytes have the same type of insulin mediated glucose receptors as skeletal (striated) muscles, which is why some researchers consider Alzheimer’s to be type 3 diabetes. The jury is still out, but that does explain the higher incidence of AD in people with T2DM.
