I've been looking at maps of the salient and wondering if the Ukranian intention is a 'kill box'. Syrskyj's certainly got the chops to plan something like that - and I'd guess at least some of the Russian brass see that as well. If they do, they could be in no position to stop their advance (pressure from Putin, not in the right chain of command) or they care so little for their troops that they're unwilling to take the blame for saying 'stop!'. Instead they're putting their guys at extreme risk and hoping they can duck blame when it all goes to hell.
Or I'm completely wrong, of course - I'm pretty good at that. :-)
