Not all networks are connected to the world: An 'internet' is two or more networks connected together through some sort of gateway(s), but 'The Internet' is the nation spanning set of interconnected networks that started around ARPA-Net and grew. (note 'an' vs 'the') making the singular one, essentially, a proper noun.

Having lived through this, capitalization carried meaning.
