The point of a smoothbore is for sabot rounds - and the only reason for them is penetrating tank armor. If your tank 'doctrine' is not to go head-to-head with opposing tanks but instead infantry support (and leave the opposing tanks to tank destroyers) - like US doctrine in WWII, then there's no point in a smoothbore.
