Never-FBer here. Right as FB was getting started, it was very clear the kind of person Zuck was (college 'bro' dude preying on coeds). I wanted nothing to do with him.

It's a pity something like Google Wave didn't take off. Servers ( O/S - had one running on a box in my basement) meshed with each other, data could be limited to local-server-only. Clients had the beginnings of social networking. Basically, think Slack UI with distributed servers and better privacy control, plus video support and the ability to mix real-time and relayed messaging.
