My wife and I have lived in a cohousing community since the mid 90s. Cohousing is a reaction to ‘suburban living’. It’s been great (imagine a swarm of free-range kids and dogs running around — kids are grown/moved now). It makes great place to weather this pandemic. We closed down our common building back when this all started, so no more shared meals or concerts. But we all know each other well, and have been seeing each other quite a lot (keeping social distance). Part of cohousing is neighborly interaction, and the site was designed for that, both by clustering houses into ‘neighborhoods’ and by every home having a ‘soft front’, meaning that there’s a place to sit and greet your neighbors as they amble by. Pre-covid, it was common to have a carafe of coffee to share.
