My own n=1 'anecdata': At one point, my job involved a lot of 'chunking' (keeping a very complex process in my head). On days where I hadn't 'swum my distance' the day before, I found this more difficult. This wasn't HIIT, but mostly level 2 cardio (with the occasional couple of laps of butterfly thrown in). Plenty of confounders, as this was typically Monday (pool usually crowded on weekends, and as a 'sinker' I didn't do well with swimming at someone else's pace, needed a half-lane to do my thing).
