I've suspected for years that the olive oil was the key to the Mediterranean diet's association with healthspan. It wasn’t clear whether it was oleic acid or oleocanthin (an anti-inflammatory in olive oil, concentration higher in green-picked olives). It's probably both working in concert - plus the removal of manufactured 'food' that is part of the 'Standard American Diet'.
