I've seen a little bit about the Ukrainians' artillery dispatch system. I could be misunderstanding, but what appears to be going on is as follows.

Roaming artillery pieces have Starlink terminals. They also have an app that works a bit like the ones Uber and Lyft have for their drivers. There's a list of possible targets, and if that piece can reach it, they pick it, send shells (or rockets) that way and... scoot. So they're only hit by counterfire by mischance.

They appear to have taken the Western model of pushing decision making down as low as possible and used it to enable an essentially distributed artillery (No artillery batteries with hierarchical control structures). I expect NATO is taking lessons.

I saw a bit on this before HIMARS were in theater, but there's no reason they can't play, too. The only puzzling thing for me is that the press isn't making a big deal about this. I think it's pretty big, but, as I've mentioned, no military background...

As far as the Poles go, I think it's a matter of how the RF military perceives the results of invading Poland, well, and the ability to stomp.

I am totally with you on reducing civilian casualties, so the less need to 'fire for effect' the better. AFAICT, the Ukrainians are being as careful as they can as the civilians are also Ukranian.

Thanks for writing the article - gave me a chance to 'think out loud' as a response. :-)
