I've been thinking about this since seeing some of those photos. I suspect that this interpersonal distance made it impossible for his lieutenants to express what a bad idea actually invading Ukraine was (as opposed to moving troops around on Russian territory so as to gain leverage for concessions from the West - which IMO was brilliant).

It's the kind of thing that needed to be said quietly, confidentially - not shouted in a room filled with other people.
