I’ve always been amazed that MacArthur wasn’t cashiered (or simply not submarine-rescued from Corregidor) because of the Clark Field fiasco. He got hours of warning, could have put recon planes up, but decided against it.

IMO, the Allies won the Pacific war in spite of MacArthur; we had the resources to both island hop and fight in the Phillipines — but a lot of people died because of his hubris.
