It's clear that it's cheaper to manufacture a ML than an equivalent-sensor DSLR, but the DSLRs don't seem to be able to command that kind of premium in the market, so it's been a matter of time and ML tech catching up. Comparing low-light AF with a DSLR to that of ML, the discrete PDAFs in the DSLR still have an advantage.
When it comes to new photographers, starting out on ML is an utter no-brainer. That's not to say that MLs are WYSIWYG, but they do have live histograms, so if you learn how to watch those you're over a major hurdle.
