Impeachment is what will help get Trump reelected.

It will certainly energize his base. But that base doesn’t seem to be expanding, and there are probably very few who aren’t going to vote, so it’s unclear whether that will make any difference.

The real question is what’s going to happen with the rest of the electorate who are not his base — particularly the non-party-aligned who didn’t bother to vote the last presidential election. One potential effect on those voters is going to be not so much from the impeachment as from Trump flailing around trying to deal with it. Think he’s capable of dealing with it like an adult (as did Bill Clinton)?

About the only thing that might motivate some of those voters in favor of Trump is an impeachment that McConnell makes as short as possible (so no information or witnesses presented) leading to a failure to remove — that Trump can claim victory from — which makes it pretty clear why Pelosi is holding the impeachment docs until there’s at least a shot at a fair trial — or it goes on long enough that it’s clear that whatever the Senate does here does not constitute anything fair.
