Agreed: a democracy and a republic are different things. The founders regarded democracy as something to be avoided. They were pretty much all classically educated, and Athenian democracy had... issues. As did the Roman Republic - and a lot of the awkwardness of the US gov't comes from their attempts to safeguard against what went wrong in Rome.
