It might make sense if you're already planning to electrify a bike, but otherwise I would expect a hub-center transmission (the ones these days are a lot better than the Schwinn 3-speed you had as a kid) and a Gilmer (toothed rubber) belt. No lubrication needed, no chain 'stretch' (really pin-roller wear) that can concentrate stress on just one or two sprocket teeth.
