It wasn't when it came out. For someone steeped in ancient and classical history "the 300" has a definite meaning (even though that number did not count the Helots - or refer to the Athenian navy's ability, though a series of battles to give the Persians no other option than that narrow strip of beach.)

BTW/FWIW, Israel was part of the Persian Empire at the time (the Empire was good at letting local areas self govern and did not impose any religion) and there were some Israelites at that battle as part of the Persian host, although it doesn't seem they actually were engaged.
