I'm tempted to start roasting my own. Selection of 'green' coffee beans is somewhat limited, so I don't get to try different terroirs (more of a thing with light roasts, but still...).
A friend who home-roasts uses an air popper for popcorn. He tells me the important part is to get one where the hot air enters from a bottom-side rather than the bottom directly. That said, I remember visiting him once and his house spelled really, really bad - which he explained as a "roast gone wrong". My wife has a super-sensitive nose, and the garage is attached, so if I ever roast my own, it'll have to be an outdoor-only thing. :-(
