I'm hoping we eventually get hybrid split systems - in the sense that there's a ground loop (with circulating fluid - e.g. water w antifreeze) in place of the outside air condenser / evaporator. It'd add a bit of complexity over the air-source (pump to drive the ground loop) - but there'd be no outside finned heat exchanger to weather. For that matter, the compressor units could come inside the basement.

Bright side: outside air temp is much less of a factor.
