I'm a bit of a NZ fanboy. I tried to immigrate back in '78 or '9 and failed the 'points' system (in spite of a graduate degree and active employment as a software architect - so I had skills to bring) because at 29 I was too old. I understand that the NZ immigration system doesn't use a 'points' system anymore. So maybe the barriers are a bit lower.
I'm from New England, not a crazy but fairly far left - and NZ is the only place I've ever been where my politics are in the center. In the US "everyone gets a fair go" gets demonized by the right. In NZ, it's unremarkable - and they're the better for it. It's not a paradise. The Maori are still not well represented in some jobs - but they're working on it.
I've been there multiple times since then, always sad to leave.
Finally, if you're a motorcyclist or a hiker or love the outdoors it's an absolute paradise environment-wise.
