If you're interested in getting into it, check out 'New Paradigm' swimming (e.g. Total Immersion). For distance swimming, I pretty much use a TI crawl modified into a sidestroke (I'm a non-floater, normal rotation doesn't get my mouth to air)

For anyone interested in *why* being longer makes you faster / lets you go further, google 'froude's law'.
