I’d have to agree that some of it is nerd-itis. I confess to sometimes ‘nerd-splaining’ — but only if someone actually asks me a question.

Comparing the behavior to rape is overboard. I’d compare it to mansplaining, gaslighting, and general boorishness. Bad enough — but not the personal violation that is rape.
