I'd agree that Zeihan has it correctly - the Russians think they need geographic boundaries they can defend. Their logistics suck and they're in demographic collapse so they need chokepoints they can station immobile - and not particularly large - forces.

That said, they're in NO position to piss off the Finns (again). Look at the spaghetti-thin connection to Murmansk - and how close that is to the border.
