Structurally our "first past the post" (candidate with the largest number of votes wins) locks us into just two viable parties. Voters can't vote for what they really want without probably being the 'spoiler' that elects what they really, really DON'T want.

There are some ways to fix that. The most workable one appears to be ranked choice voting.

Worth taking a look at if you want more than two viable parties (which I agree is unfortunate).
