I would expect people previously infected (AKA 'natural immunity') to have a bit better protection against new variants simply because the epitopes presented to T-cells would be a random assortment of the peptides that make up the virus - and the major location for virus evolution has been the spike. Susceptibility to infection seems to bear this out, but severity does not, so...?
