I wonder what happened to word order? Rich Hill (or mountain - 'hill' is 'colline') should be mont riche (like mount royal in Quebec).

Of course, the Normans started out as norse - and I'm pretty sure the word order would have been the same in old Norse as in Old English, so I dunno...

Speaking of Lord Richmond, it was common practice in the English colonies to name your prospective town/city after a noble at court - the thought being that they might be interested enough in having a place named for themselves that they'd get the paperwork done back at the court. I've lived in a couple of New England towns named for nobles who never set foot in the Americas.
