I use grammar as an opportunity to be a wise ass.
When asked “What’s up?” I’ll sometimes respond with “that’s a direction perpendicular to the surface of the planet we’re on”, to “What’s going on?” the obvious answer is “verbal phrase.”
It would never occur to me to try to correct someone’s speaking. But when written, I cringe at the wrong to/too/two, its/it’s, and their/they’re, but you be you.
If you’re trying to write a persuasive argument, you’ll find you’ve lost people like me; I’ve found myself dismissing someone’s argument partway through over something grammatically cringe-worthy. At the first one, I tell myself I’m sliding into ad hominem reasoning; at the second one, I’m gone.
