I suspect that 'butter wrapped in foil' was one of those things that was general knowledge - but got forgotten. There was a margarine (Imperial?) that pretty much based its advertising campaign on being foil wrapped.
That said, I lost my 'taste' for milk when I was about 19, and possibly coincidentally that was the year my family switched from glass bottled milk (from a local store, we'd switched from delivery when I was a little kid) to cartons. Not sure about cause and effect here as those glass bottles were gallons and once I wasn't drinking milk, household consumption had to have gone down (teens can put a *lot* of food away).
